Oh 2016 – what a roller coaster of a year – We’ve all spent considerable time mourning the loss of some of the most influential humans of our time and pondering an uncertain future under the given political climate but let’s not forget to remember the moments that had us laughing to the point of tears and cheers-ing drinks around the tailgate with our favorite shred partners-in-crime.
The Coalition Snow team took a minute to remember our biggest accomplishments of 2016. It’s been a wild ride and we’re so appreciative that you have joined us on this journey. Without further ado – here’s our top moments of 2016!
Designed the first woman’s pro-model freestyle ski EVER
Wow. This one is a big deal for us. When we created Coalition Snow our vision was much bigger than creating badass skis and boards – we’re also changing the way women are perceived within the industry. It’s no secret that female skiers are continually sandbagged by sponsors, event organizers and ski media alike – especially on the freestyle circuit. It’s bullshit – and we think it’s time for a change.
So when professional Olympic and X-Games athlete Roz Groenewoud approached us with a idea for her dream half-pipe ski it was time for Coalition Snow to walk the walk. Roz worked with us to design the ski she had spent her whole career searching for and we launched the Roz G ski just days before her comeback runs at the 2016 Winter X-Games.
Created the La Nieve backcountry ski
We didn’t stop at designing a ski for women who rip up the pipe – we also wanted to create the perfect tool for women who enjoy the skin up as much as the shred down. So we enlisted Jillian Raymond to help us design the perfect backcountry ski. On the surface, Jillian may not look like your typical “pro skier” but she has skied on and off-piste all over the globe 12 months a year so we trust her when she says she knows what she needs from a backcountry ski.
The ski she designed comes in at just 6 pounds while maintaining the stability needed to conquer any conditions.
Launched the first #ExtremeFaceShots Demo Tour
We knew we had designed some of the best skis and boards we have ever ridden but we had to prove it to you so we hit the road to bring Coalition Snow to as many mountains as we could fit into a single season. If you missed us last season – don’t fret. We’re doing it again and this year it’s going to be even bigger and better than before. Come find us at a mountain near you.
Built the Sisterhood of Shred
We’ve had an incredible opportunity to connect with some of the most amazing women over the last few years and we wanted to share that with everyone by creating a space where the women of the mountains can connect, collaborate and most importantly – shred together. We started with groups in California, Utah, Michigan, Colorado and West Virginia and we’re continuing to grow.
It was a major accomplishment for us to be featured in USA Today. We were so excited to know that we were catching the attention of people outside of the snowsports industry and they liked what we’re doing, but that wasn’t all – the story was featured on Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls. Talk about *swoon* #ladyboss.
And when CNN took a look at the evolution of women’s skis – they knew the article wouldn’t be complete without talking to the founder of the world’s first all-women’s ski and snowboard company.
Editors Pick in Ski Media
It’s one thing when WE say we have the best skis and boards on the market – but it’s much more exciting when some of the most experienced and knowledgeable gear testers in the industry agree. That’s why we were so excited to see the Abyss powder ski chosen as Editor’s Pick in Skiing Magazine and one of the top powder skis of the year in Blister Gear Review.
Offered our skis and boards internationally
In the very beginning, our skis and snowboards were only available for sell online, but we knew the importance of being able to touch and feel our skis and boards before purchasing so we set out to partner with stores that share our passion and values.
Today we’re proud to say our skis and boards are available at select REI stores.
We’re also excited to expand beyond the US. In Canada, Coalition skis and boards can be found at Freefall Sun Peaks in Kamloops, British Columbia.
And south of the Equator we have partnered with Blackbird Bespoke Ski Co.
Took a stand #PussyGrabsBack
As we move into 2017 we will continue to stand on the side women, our LGBTQ friends, people of color and all religions and ethnicities, and the earth. We can help shape what the next four years will looks like. Now is not the time to throw our hands up in the air, turn our backs on what’s important. We cannot say that everything will be OK, because for many people and places it will not. Now is the time to fight even harder for what we believe in.
