Your CliffsNotes About Zapotec Weavers

The goal of our Marketplace is to connect you with small businesses doing big things in the world, both near and far. One of our newest editions is the family-owned, midwest-based Ellenbecker Trading Company who specialize in the finest Zapotec handmade weavings.

Each weaving is imported from the village of Teotitlan in southern Mexico. These weavings originate from a culture where family is the center of life and the vast majority of people still work in their homes.

No other importers have this type of close, personal relationship with the weavers of Teotitlan, and they are honored to be a part of the Zapotec artisan tradition. And now we are too!

From the sacred hills of Oaxaca to prestigious galleries worldwide, Zapotec weavers have captivated audiences with their masterful blend of ancestral techniques and artistic vision.

The Ancient Art of Zapotec Weaving: Discover Oaxaca's Living Heritage

In the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico, the indigenous Zapotec weavers of Teotitlan del Valle create some of the most stunning textiles in North America. Their intricate designs and masterful techniques reflect a cultural legacy spanning over 1,000 years, offering a rare glimpse into pre-Columbian Mexican traditions that continue to thrive today.

A Rich Cultural Heritage in Southern Mexico

The Zapotec people have called the Oaxaca Valley home for millennia, developing alongside other great Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya, Toltec, and Aztec peoples. Today, visitors can explore the magnificent ruins of ancient Zapotec cities, which rank among Mexico's most impressive archaeological treasures. These sites stand as testament to their sophisticated civilization and architectural prowess.

Living Traditions in Modern Times

Unlike many indigenous cultures, the Zapotec people have successfully preserved their ancestral traditions well into the 21st century. Throughout the Oaxaca Valley, many communities still speak their native Zapotec language, while local markets showcase their exceptional artisanal crafts, keeping their cultural heritage vibrantly alive.
