We're teaming up with Zawadisha for a 15-day cycling trip through Kenya where you'll pedal through the Maasai Mara and make your way to the white sand beaches of Diani. Along the way, you'll get to meet the women of Zawadisha, glamp in safari tents, make lasting memories with new friends, and be wowed by the wildlife.

July 18th - August 1, 2026

This trip is appropriate for beginner to expert cyclists. Beginners to intermediate cyclists will need to take their training seriously (but it's fun and no pressure), and the support vehicle makes it a low-stress experience. Advanced riders will be amazed by the views and the experience, and they will find the terrain very manageable.

Zawadisha is the nonprofit that Coalition's Founder, Jen Gurecki, started in Kenya in 2012. The mission is to provide small loans to finance the livelihoods of rural Kenyan women. Jen has more than 20 years of experience adventuring, working, and building relationships across the country. This trip brings together her love of cycling with her love of her second home, Kenya.

    Itinerary

    July 18th - August 1, 2026

DAY 1 (no cycling): Karibu Kenya! Meet your fellow riders IRL, visit the Village Market Mall to stock up on any last minute needs, and join us for an afternoon orientation in Nairobi before you are treated to an incredible Ethiopian dinner and hotel stay.

DAY 2, 20 KM Warm Up Cycling: Drive across the great Rift Valley and into the Loita Hills at the edge of the Maasai Mara; end the day with a warm-up loop through the forest around your camp at the Maji Moto Maasai Cultural Centre.

DAY 3, 50 KM +372m -514m: The adventure begins, and we head west, starting our ride along the tarmac road. We soon turn off onto long gravel roads that take us through villages and subsistence farms. There is not much climbing with long gravel roads and the beautiful Mara Scenery. We will be wild camping off the beaten track on the edge of Naibosho conservancy, where giraffe sightings are common.

DAY 4, 60KM +484m -742m: Carrying on west, the farm land is left behind as we start to pass between conservancies. Today, we will definitely see more wildlife as the great Mara plains open before us. We will be camping at Talek, which is one of the main entrances to the Maasai Mara National Park and situated on the Talek River, where a quick visit gives us the chance to see hippo and crocodiles in their natural habitat.

A half day today, as we arrive in time for lunch, this means in the afternoon you can relax in camp or head out for a game drive in a safari car in the Mara National Park. Please note that the game drive and conservancy fees are not included in the price.

DAY 5, 50KM +819m -551m: Day 5 is one of the most scenic days of riding of the trip. We work our way around the edge of the National Park, giving a good chance of seeing plenty of wildlife. A climb towards the end of the day over some hills brings us to Ololaumitia. Another beautiful campsite, and this fantastic day gives us plenty to talk about around the fire in the evening.

DAY 6, 50KM +888m -667m:  We turn back east and head away from the Mara, leaving the plains behind and entering the hills. This day will be the queen's stage of the trip with the most climbing so far. After a tough day on the bike, it's nice to settle into camp, enjoy a hot shower, and clean away the iconic red dust of Kenya.

DAY 7 (no cycling): Depart the Mara in the morning for a half-day drive back to Nairobi. Relax at the hotel and enjoy a meal at one of our favorite restaurants.

DAY 8 (no cycling): An early start gets us to the Standard-Gauge Railway for a four-hour train ride to Voi, the closest town to the rural community where Zawadisha calls home. Transport to one of our secret gems outside of Voi for amazing sundowners and wildlife spotting.

DAY 9, 30 KM cycling, ~flat: Ride on the backroads to a sisal estate for an evening of gorgeous camping. You might just see a few camels along the way.

DAY 10, 69km +356km -300m: Ride to Maungu the back way on an old trading route. You will be greeted by the women of Zawadisha and spend the evening at the remote Kivuli Camp in the Tsavo Conservancy. Keep your eyes peeled for more elephants, giraffes, and zebra on the drive to the camp and your ears open for late night lion roars.

DAY 11 (no cycling): Spend the day learning about life in rural Kenya from the women of Zawadisha. You'll travel into the community, visit a homestead, and meet the Neema Women's Group. Bring your box of tissues and some extra cash for those handmade baskets ;)

DAY 12 (no cycling): It's another beautiful day with the women of Zawadisha. Dance, learn, explore, and bask in the richness of their rural culture. This might just end up being the highlight of your trip!

DAY 13, 85km +277m -250m: Time to say goodbye to Zawadisha and make our way to the Indian Ocean. We'll have a leisurely ride to a wild camp near the Shimba Hills.

DAY 14, 65km +861m -550m: Our final day of cycling takes us up and over the Shimba Hills and down to Diani Beach through rolling hills peppered with palm trees. A cocktail on the beach brings our journey to a close with the team dancing the night away under coconut trees.

Day 15: It's time to say goodbye. Travel back to Nairobi via train or plane and prepare to fly home. Better yet—enjoy some well-deserved rest in a tropical, coastal paradise and add on another day in Diani. We can help you plan the second leg of your incredible adventure through Kenya. You've come all this way -- why leave so soon?

    FAQS

    You've Got Questions

    And We've Got Answers

    Can I pay in installments?

Yep! Pay the $250 deposit today and we will bill you the remainder in three equal payments, to be paid in full by May 1, 2026.

How can I take $500 off and support Zawadisha?

We will create a fundraising platform like this one from a previous cycling trip that makes it easy for you to raise tax-deductible donations for Zawadisha. If you choose to fundraise, you are required to fundraise at least $500. We do encourage everyone to fundraise so that we can make the most positive impact in the lives of the women we serve.

    Who's in charge?

Jen Gurecki, the founder of Zawadisha, is organizing this trip in collaboration with Savage Wilderness Safaris. The Savage family (yes, that is their surname) and their team have been facilitating school groups and private tours for more than 20 years. In fact, Jen cycled across Africa with James Savage in 2018.

    How many people are going?

A maximum of 8 people will be on this trip. We will all have a chance to get to know each other before the trip through optional monthly Zoom calls. This trip is open to women, non-binary, and trans identifying folks.

What level skiers and riders is this trip meant for?

This trip is designed to include all cyclists. There's a little something for everyone, regardless of ability. Beginning cyclists may find there are certain small sections they may want to walk their bikes over, or they may want to spend some time in the support vehicle, which is a totally unforgettable and positive experience. Intermediate cyclists will be challenged and might also want to jump in the support vehicle should they want a break. Expert cyclists will be thrilled because it's Kenya.

I'm afraid of holding the group back; should I still come?

YES! We embrace a choose-your-own-adventure sort of experience. We will be able to split into different groups based on skill level and interest and the support vehicle is always available.

How can I get to know the people on this trip?

We will hold optional monthly Zoom calls. Please be prepared to share your pronouns, the native land you reside on, and a little bit about yourself. You are welcome to join the calls before committing to learn more about the trip and make an informed booking decision. Please contact us for the registration link for the calls.

Do I need to bring my bike?

It's up to you. Bikes are a standard piece of checked luggage and any bike shop can help you box it or get it in your bike bag. We will help you put it back together. You also can rent a hardtail MTB bike or e-bike in Kenya for an additional daily rate (charged per day of cycling, not per day of the trip).

Do I need to carry my stuff every day?

No. We will have a support vehicle that will transport all of your personal items.

What will the accommodation be like?

In Nairobi, while with Zawadisha, and on the coast, we will stay in a simple but nice hotel or guest house; accommodation is shared and you will have your own bed.

We will camp while cycling, and you will have your own tent that you will set up and break down. You need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow; pads are provided.

    What's the food like?

They are delicious, nutritious, and filling :) All meals will be prepared for you, and we can accommodate dietary needs. You will enjoy a mix of African delights and food that reminds you of home.

    What's your refund policy?

You can receive a full refund, less the deposit, up to six months before the departure of the trip. If you need to cancel with less than six months' notice but more than 30 days, we will provide credit for a future trip. Cancelations made with less than a 30-day notice will not be refunded, and credit will not be provided.

What else do I need to know?

We are committed to creating a safe space for all participants and, as such, have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, intimidation, and/or verbal/physical abuse.
