Coalition Snow + TREW Gear Present

Backcountry Beta

No, you’re not hallucinating - that really is snow outside on the ground. Albeit just a slight dusting, it still means that Winter is coming and it’s time to get your mind, heart, and soul back into backcountry mode.

That's why we've teamed up with TREW Gear for our fourth season of Backcountry Beta, a virtual event series designed to help us refresh our backcountry knowledge, learn new safety skills, open our eyes to different perspectives, and build our confidence in the mountains.

JANUARY 9, 2025 @ 5 PM PST

Intro to Avalanche Awareness

In our first Backcountry Beta session of the season, we're honored to have Chloe Donlan from the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC). Whether you ski, snowshoe, snowboard, or snowmobile, recognition of avalanche danger is an essential and potentially life saving skill.

This 90 minute introductory class provides a basic approach to managing risk. You'll learn how to access avalanche and mountain weather forecasts and recognize basic signs of avalanche danger.

PREVIOUS BB SESSIONS

Multi Day Trip Planning

In this session we discussed a topic that can seem daunting: planning multi-day trips.

This session was facilitated Coalition Snow Ambassador Betsey Peryea, an adaptive athlete with a full spinal fusion and a demyelinating nerve disease who spends her time skiing, climbing, hiking/backpacking, and training for her mountain goals.

Communication for Comfort & Safety in the Backcountry

Have you learned the hard way how crucial communication is while backcountry skiing/riding? Most people struggle with communication, so we need to put in the extra effort. Natasha Buffo brings the knowledge from seven years of community mental health tools to open our eyes and ears to the communication skills that can drastically improve comfort and safety while exploring the backcountry.

Terrain Selection & Risk Mitigation

In our third session, Coalition Ambassadors Clancy Sindlinger and Madi McKinstry, both of whom bring years of experience as ski patrollers and backcountry guides, will discuss Backcountry etiquette, risk assessment + mitigation, and terrain management in more complex terrain

Shift Into Your Backcountry Mindset

Winter is coming and it’s time to get your mind, heart, and soul back into backcountry mode. Our first event of the year will be led by Ginny White, a longtime TREW athlete, ski guide, and accredited snow forecaster. Ginny will be taking the reins and guiding us through how she preps for Winter.

Tune Your Body + Your Mind

Winter is here and many of us are switching out our hiking boots for skis and snowboards. That's why for our second installment of Backcountry Beta, we're teaming up with Ski Babes to learn how to tune up our bodies and minds for the season.
