Holiday Watch List

There's nothing like curling up in front of the fire after a long day of skiing, beer in hand, and a full belly of nachos (IDK, what do you eat?), and a playlist of feel-good films. Our friends at Women Sports Film Festival put together this list, and we wanted to share it with you. Enjoy.

Brittany Runs a Marathon

Hilarious and outgoing, Brittany Forgler is everybody’s best friend - except her own. Her partying, underemployment and toxic relationships are catching up with her. Too broke for a gym and too proud to ask for help, Brit is at a loss, until her neighbor pushes her to run one sweaty block. Soon, she sets an almost unthinkable goal: the New York City Marathon. Watch it here.

Johanna Under the Ice

Finnish freediver Johanna Nordblad holds the world record for a 50-meter dive under ice. She discovered her love for the sport through cold-water treatment while recovering from a downhill biking accident that almost took her leg. British director and photographer Ian Derry captures her taking a plunge under the Arctic ice. A 2017 WSFF selection. Watch it here.

Jesszilla

Jesselyn “JessZilla” Silva is serious about boxing, and at 10 years old trains seriously with dreams of becoming a professional fighter. Her father, Pedro, finds himself caught in between supporting her dream and worrying about her future in boxing. A 2017 WSFF selection. Watch it here.

Afghan Cycles

What lengths would you go to in order to ride a bicycle? Following a new generation of young Afghan women cyclists, AFGHAN CYCLES uses the bicycle to tell a story of women’s rights - human rights - and the struggles faced by Afghan women on a daily basis, from discrimination to abuse, to the oppressive silencing of their voices in all aspects of contemporary society. A 2018 WSFF selection. Watch it here.

Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable

BETHANY HAMILTON: UNSTOPPABLE tells the story of surfer Bethany Hamilton, who at age 13 was out surfing when she was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark, a run-in that cost Hamilton her left arm. Not only did Hamilton survive the attack--she was back on the competitive surfing circuit less than a year later. More than a decade later, Hamilton, now a mother, undertakes her greatest challenge: chasing a toddler and the biggest wave of her career. A 2018 WSFF selection. Watch it here.

Martha & Niki

In 2010 Martha Nabwire and Niki Tsappos took part in the biggest international Street Dance Competition, Juste Debout in Paris. It was the first time ever two women became World Champions in Hip Hop. This film depicts their love of dance and each other, and documents a friendship put to the test. A 2017 WSFF community screening. Watch it here.

Love & Basketball

LOVE & BASKETBALL is a 2000 American romantic drama film starring Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps. The film tells the story of Quincy McCall (Epps) and Monica Wright (Lathan), two next-door neighbors in Los Angeles, California who are pursuing their basketball careers before eventually falling for each other. Watch it here.

Half the Picture

HALF THE PICTURE celebrates the groundbreaking work of female film directors and investigates the systemic discrimination that has, for decades, denied opportunities to far too many talented women in Hollywood. A 2018 WSFF selection. Watch it here.
